Our Work
We hired a candidate.
A day after she started, she said:
“I want you to know I’m 6 months pregnant.”
Here’s why:
She and her husband were down to their last $1,000. She wanted to tell us she was expecting. But was worried about getting rejected.
Which is completely understandable.
3 months later she went on maternity leave.
I missed my son’s firsts.
First time on a swing. First time he rolled over. First time he stood up.
My nanny sent me the photos while I was working on IPOs, mergers, and financings. All I could think was: “I should be there with him.”
I’ve always loved working and was convinced motherhood wouldn’t change that.
But as soon as I got home, my son would cling onto me and refuse to let go. Then he’d practically cry himself to sleep.
My boss used to bully me:
- Make fun of my clothes
- Call me “Kenneth” even though I hated it
- Tell me I “smile too much” and “shouldn’t be this happy”
My theory:
I was confident. Laid back. Older than the straight-out-of-college kids I was working with. Professional. Good at what I did.
And while I respected her seniority, I was never submissive, fawning, or scared of her authority.
I think she found that threatening.
I interviewed a candidate with a resume gap of 1 year.
His father was dying of cancer.
He wanted to be there for him.
So after moving back home, he and his family took care of his dad. Saw him through the last 18 months of his life. Cherished every moment.
His ashes were scattered at sea off the coast of Los Angeles.
The candidate told me he gets up at 5 a.m. every day to surf there.
This one interviewer caught me off guard—
He wasn’t interested in my experience.
Instead, he asked questions like:
“What breaks your heart?”
“What are you passionate about?”
“How would you feel in this specific scenario?”
It was only years later that I understood why:
He was trying to see if I was an empathetic human being.
Hard skills were just a matter of time.
But soft skills?
LinkedIn loves failure stories.
But only with a happy ending.
And that’s a problem.
It makes us believe that every failure leads to better circumstances.
But sometimes, failure is just failure. You fall on your face. There’s pain, shame, embarrassment.
Maybe even chronic physical and emotional issues to deal with.

Correction. You don’t think you have good stories to tell. We’ve done this with dozens of people. Every one of them had stories that brought tears, laughter, and lightbulb “Aha!” moments.

Maybe. Maybe not. Either way, we’ll coach you on how to stay on the lookout for interesting events that happen in your day-to-day life and provide prompts on trending topics. We’ve had viral content about anything from conversations with Uber drivers to pets, so we’re not worried.

Understandable. If you’re a private person, the thought of sharing anything personal or even business-related can be daunting. We can start slow. Take a small step out of your comfort zone. And before you know it, you’ll be over that fear.
.png)
That’s fair. We’ll focus on your reasons for being in business. On giving kudos to team members. On celebrating your clients and their accomplishments. It doesn’t have to be only about you to get great results.

We feel the same. We only work with a handful of clients at any given time and develop meaningful relationships. We want to see you crush it on social media. But if we discover it’s not a good fit, we don’t want your money, which is why all our clients are on a month-to-month retainer.
